Explore Limpokwena Nature Reserve with a trained and qualified field guide on our game drives. You will be stunned by the transforming scenery on a network of tracks leading from the thick riverine forest along the water’s edge, snaking through the vibrant Mopane thickets, and then eventually opening up into the magnificent immensity of the acacia savannah. Due to our no hunting policy, our more curious giraffes and other antelopes often stop and pose for a photo; you will be in unparalleled proximity to these awesome beings. We recommend you stay at least 3 nights to get a full experience of the surrounding nature, while also leaving ample time to unwind.

Included in our rates are one guided game drive per day.

Morning drives depart at 6:00 am (Summer season) or 7:00 am (Winter season) and return to the lodge 2 – 2.5 hours later.

Afternoon drives depart at 4:30pm (Summer season) or 4:00 pm (Winter season) and return to the lodge 2 – 2.5 hours later.

Guided Bush Walks:
Bush walks are offered at an additional rate of R350.00 per person. There is noting like encountering game on foot without the disturbance of a vehicle. We will spend time on tracks and signs as well as a bit of birding, for a much more intimate encounter. Silence and solitude are rare luxuries in modern life, but you will find both in abundance here on our walking safaris. However, what seems like a quiet rest spot soon becomes an orchestra of the intense fish eagle cry, the low baritone of Pel’s Fishing Owl hoots, the rustle of antelope in the foliage, and the gurgling of the river.

Advance bookings are essential for bush walks, and availability is dependent on our judgment of certain conditions and animal movements. Please note that we do not allow children under the age of 12 years, as there is a possibility of encountering large dangerous game such as Elephant and Hippo while on foot. We advise a moderate level of fitness for bush walks.

Full-day or Half-day Fishing:
Half-day fishing is offered at an additional price of R85.00 per person, for 4 hours from around 8:00 am – 12:00 pm.
We will transport and supervise you for your protection. Fishing tackle and bait are not provided – we rent out rods at a breakages deposit of R200.00 per rod. Comfy chairs, a net, and help baiting up are provided, but it is up to your skill to land something! Beginner’s luck is quite strong in these waters too- it is common to catch Barbel over 5 kg along the Limpopo regardless of experience.
Full-day fishing is R120.00 per person, for 8 hours from around 8:00 am – 4:00pm (same inclusions half-day activity).

Bird-watching:
For the avid birders, our proximity to Botswana and our location at the meeting of two rivers brings a myriad 600 species to us. We are located along the Soutpansberg-Limpopo Birding Route as recognized by BirdLife South Africa. Some of our species include:
Crimson Breasted Shrike, Open Billed Stork, Morning Dove, Meyer’s Parrot, Senegal Coucal, Pel’s Fishing Owl, Ground Hornbill, Meve’s Starling, Southern Pied Babbler, and both White and Cape Vultures.

Our greatest treasure is the diversity of the landscape, and the wildlife that inhabits it. Although we do get crazily excited about the occasional lion coming over from Botswana, and are very sad to have relocated our White Rhino for their safety, Limpokwena doesn’t just stop at treasuring the traditional “Big 5″. We love to break convention by sharing an appreciation for the tracks, smells, and sounds of other awesome creatures around us. We are very keen to bring you: the Limpokwena “Big 7”.

That’s not even the tip of the iceberg, as some of our bird species out of the 500 documented in this area include: Crimson Breasted Shrike, Open Billed Stork, Morning Dove, Meyer’s Parrot, Senegal Coucal, Pel’s Fishing Owl, Ground Hornbill, Meve’s Starling, Southern Pied Babbler, and both White and Cape Vultures.
