Our History
A Tale of the Land, its People, and Our Dreams
The North-Eastern tip of South Africa where Limpokwena Nature Reserve calls home is not only close to Kruger National Park, but also a part of the Mapungubwe Golden Mile which houses archeologically significant findings on ancient peoples. We have found evidence of previous inhabitation here at Limpokwena, that we have left scattered around the koppies for you to discover: rock formations depicting old homesteads and clay pot remnants and other artifacts from a previous lifetime.
Centuries later in 1870, what was then 1800ha hectares, became a farm listed as “Bivack” (Derived from “Bivouac” – to take shelter often temporarily”) The history of this nature reserve lives on through old farming infrastructure and Baobab trees scratched with initials and dates from the late 1800’s.
Limpokwena’s ambition has always been to offer a safe-haven for game animals in an area where hunting is one of the main industries along with agriculture. One of our conservation goals has always been to create a corridor along the Limpopo river, where fences are few and far between and animals are able to move freely across areas which haven’t been accessible in the past. Ideally we wish for neighbouring farms and like-minded property owners to drop fences with us, to create a reserve like no other. Where the game would be truly wild once again. Limpokwena Nature Reserve thanks you for helping for our cause in choosing to stay with us.
